The latent power of wind amazes me. Wind cannot be seen but can be felt and can cause effects which can be seen and heard.
Regardless of where we live, we’re all aware of the potentially destructive power of wind. But if properly harnessed, wind can also bring tremendous benefits. Think how much it would impact the world if there were no wind. The earth would be stagnant, stinking from pollution and from the normal decaying process that is occurring on the planet.
Wind cannot be seen, but its effects can be felt and heard; just like Holy Spirit. We cannot see Him, but we can feel the effects of His presence and His power. On the Day of Pentecost, Acts 2:2 says, “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.”
A couple of years ago, I was attending the School of Kingdom Ministry shortly after my daughter’s death. My heart was so broken but I loved God enough to know I could trust Him in all things in my life, even that experience and with my pain. For years, the deepest depths of my soul had longed to be used by God for the Kingdom. Losing Heather took that desire to new depths. I wanted more of Holy Spirit in my life to lead me into God’s purpose for me. That meant surrendering myself to Him and I wanted to learn from the school how to do that and how to be used by God for His purposes for the Kingdom.
During one session of School of Kingdom Ministry, they prayed for the gift of praying in the Spirit to be released in me and advised me to just give It voice. I wasn’t pressured. I wasn’t threatened. I wasn’t embarrassed. I wasn’t ashamed. I wasn’t uncomfortable. I felt tremendous peace and suddenly sounds that I didn’t recognize began coming from my mouth.
Though the sounds were faint in the beginning, I knew they were coming from the deepest depths of me. I also knew, somehow, that my spirit was crying out for Holy Spirit to rescue me from the pain I was experiencing and to use me for the Kingdom to the degree of my pain.
We are spiritual beings and our spirit longs to be unified with Holy Spirit. It’s through surrendering ourselves to Holy Spirit that we experience that unification with Him. At least, that has been my experience.
Shortly after that session when I began praying in the Spirit I learned that one of those sounds coming from me was the word wind in Chinese. Then, God reminded me of how Holy Spirit came as a mighty wind in Acts.
Within a couple of days, I picked up a book loaned to me to read by a friend titled The Wind In My Sails. As I began reading I knew I wanted my life, my witness, my plans, my purpose, my ministry to all be propelled by the Wind of Holy Spirit in my sails.
When the Wind of Holy Spirit propels us, it’s His power and might, His wisdom, His sovereignty moving us forward and guiding us. We only have to lift our sails and wait expectantly for His Wind to move us.
Of course, we have the ability to turn the wheel causing ourselves to lose the force of the Wind. When we do, we may find ourselves floating along stalled from time to time. Holy Spirit will not propel us in the wrong direction, which is why we must seek to grow in our relationship with Him by renewing our minds through the Word, living a life surrendered to Him, and learn to recognize His voice in order to stay the course.
Regardless of how much we want to move forward, we must make sure it’s the Wind of Holy Spirit propelling us forward and not the wind of man. It’s okay and I believe we should paddle our boat in search of the Wind of Holy Spirit. We do that by renewing our mind in the Word. I also believe we should encourage others to seek Him and surrender to Him. However, we must never attempt to serve as the wind in another’s sail.
I recently heard a story of how much an individual was hurt by someone who they considered a friend. The friend told them if they didn’t learn to speak in tongues the friend was going to leave them behind. I’ve never heard of anyone learning to speak in tongues. I’ve been taught that it is a gift given instead of a learned skill. For me, it was a gift received through a surrendered heart with the desire to experience more of Holy Spirit and a more profound relationship with Him because His Love was drawing me deeper. It was Holy Spirit that drew me deeper not the threat of losing a friend. I hurt for this person because I saw how much they were hurt.
How many times do we do that? How many times do we hurt others because we desire for them to have a deeper relationship, to experience what we have experienced in our own relationship with Holy Spirit or to meet our expectations of what we believe their relationship with Holy Spirit should look like.
I wonder how often Jesus was frustrated with the twelve because they just didn’t get it or because their faith was small. I don’t recall reading or hearing anyone speak about Jesus threatening to leave any of them behind because they had not reached a level of trust or faith that He expected of them.
God, I pray I never hurt anyone by trying to be the wind in their sail to propel them instead of encouraging them along their course.
As we’re traveling our course we often encounter others and we may travel along beside them for awhile and then we may find ourselves going in a different direction and that’s okay. God help me, as much as it may hurt me to some friends walk away, I would never want to hold anyone back from moving forward along their course with Holy Spirit. We each have our own journey to travel and just because our course is not the same as theirs doesn’t mean either of us are right or wrong. Each is just different and God can certainly use any of us wherever we are along our course. He demonstrated that with the twelve. I honestly believe that every time I’ve been adrift without the wind God has found purpose in those events as well.
My advice to this individual was to extend grace, to understand that it was the individual’s desire to help and not hurt, to let them go if that’s what they feel they must do, to remain in the Word, to pray for wisdom and for God to send a friend with a humble heart who will encourage and inspire them instead of threaten to leave or leave them, to keep their sails up and to continue pursuing Holy Spirit with a heart of surrender.
There is only one way to the Father but we all sail different courses to get there. We just need to make sure it’s the Wind of Holy Spirit in our sails. I know I want to be propelled by His Wind and no other wind.
